In a frugal age where hotel owners are counting every penny spent on upkeep, the Custom Hotel in Los Angeles has enjoyed two major renovations in 4 years.

The 250-room Custom Hotel at LAX is being “re-introduced” after yet another makeover given to it by JDV Hospitality, which is now in charge. The previous owners had spent more than $20 million on a full renovation as recently as fall 2007.

One of the obvious advantages is its Westchester location – one mile from LAX and a few minutes from Los Angeles attractions like the Venice Beach Boardwalk and the Santa Monica Pier.

While a gazillion other LAX airport hotels can lay claim to the same convenient location, the Custom Hotel still manages to stand apart as the only boutique property among the lot.

As per the JDV custom that each of its hotels have a unique personality befitting its location and culture, this one too has a decor and theme that harks back to the golden years of air travel in the 60′s, when flying was fun and glamorous, and 9/11 didn’t mean anything much.

The guest rooms and suites offer more choice than the cookie-cutter brand-name hotels lined up on W Century Blvd, since each floor of the Custom Hotel has its own graphic concept. In fact, you can actually custom-ize your room, because the LED lighting allows you to change the color of the lighting to suit your mood.

From the elevated rooms on floors nine thru twelve, you can enjoy panoramic views of the Pacific, Malibu, Hollywood, downtown LA or the LAX runway. Speaking of which, you won’t have a problem with noise since the rooms are protected by double insulated windows which can also be opened, if you need fresh air.

The airport theme extends to all parts of the hotel, what with a Layover Lounge and a LAX Lounge, the ‘Hanger 39′ lobby level event space with bar, and a vending machine room that’s called ‘Duty Free.’

Being Los Angeles, the stadium like sundeck and pool space is a party hub, with cabanas by the fire pit and Chef Naga’s (Katsuo Nagasawa) Deck33 restaurant on the pool deck.

The hotel’s official re-launch is set for Sept 1, but it is open for guests with an introductory summer kick-off rate from $109. Includes overnight stay, shuttle to LAX and Manhattan Beach, and complimentary mojitos for two, topped off with free WiFi throughout the hotel.

Considering the location, the almost-famous Welton Becket designed 12-story tower, and the fact that these are brand-new rooms renovated in June 2011, that’s a good enough deal if you need a place to stay near LAX.
